A Thief at Our Campsite
From Saturday, April 25th…..
It started out innocently enough. We were having a campfire after a fun day exploring Jekyll Island. It was, in fact, the first campfire of our journey. We were all prepared with marshmallows, chocolate bars and graham crackers. There we are, toasting our marshmallows and making s’mores, YUM! Oops, one drops off Nadia’s stick. No problem, stick another one on. Double oops, she steps on it. Yuck. This happens again, now both of her flip flops are marshmallow coated.
We put the flip flops over on the picnic table to deal with in the morning. We’re having fun enjoying our chocolatey delights. Everybody finishes up and my brother, Thom, decides he’d like to watch a little television. We have one on the outside of the RV for movies under the stars. The rest of us are over by the fire. Thom hears a little noise over by the picnic table. He shines his flashlight and catches our thief red-handed!
A raccoon was scurrying around in the dark. This raccoon however seems to be addicted to marshmallows. Upon being spotted, it grabbed one of the flip flops in its mouth and took off towards the tree line! When I realized it was a raccoon, I was tickled pink trying to get a photo, my brother was thinking rabies and Nadia was in hysterics. “Will it bring my shoe back mom, I really liked those flip flops?”, she asks between sobs. I go over to where I saw the raccoon take off and shine the light. There it is, gotcha! Not so fast, it grabs the shoe and takes off again. That little stinker, it’s teasing me!
I go back to the campfire and everyone has already bolted for the RV. Really guys?!! Hmmmph, those chickens, it was just a raccoon. Who in the world could be afraid of a raccoon unless it’s approaching you with a foaming mouth in the middle of the day?! I had to stay outside to make sure the fire died down. Do you believe ( we’ve dubbed him Ricky Raccoon) came back in search for more sugary confections? Without the shoe of course. He wouldn’t leave until I put all the s’more fixings away. I think the best account of the evening can be summed up by my brothers Facebook post where he teases me about it. Brothers!
So…… We built a fire in the firepit to roast marshmallows… Unfortunately Nadia lost a lot of marshmallows on the ground, which of course ended up on the bottom of her flip flops, so Nads put her flip flops by the picnic table to be cleaned in the morning…. I decided to turn the outside TV on so we could watch TV outside…. I got the TV working, and started watching…. I heard a slight hissing noise and turned towards where Nads flip flops were……Low and behold, a Raccoon was enjoying the marshmallows!!!!! I shooed him away, and the girls went crazy!!!! Debbie of course wanted to invite him in for dinner, Nads wanted to hole up in the RV, Alissa and Alaina, we’re trying to fight to get in the RV , and Debbie went in search of the raccoon . Debbie is getting a photo op for the raccoon, using the other shoe as bait! Nadia’s whigging out, pissed because her shoe is gone……Ohhhhh…. he’s back and Deb wants to know where the shoe is…. The raccoon is keeping tight-lipped about it. I think Iwillfreak if Ihear a knock on the door tonite! It’ll probably be the raccoon asking if Debbie can come out and play!At this time, the raccoon is luring Debbie into the woods to get her away from the shoe. I’m going in with a flashlight to liberate my sister from her raccoon infatuation. They’re always cute until they attack !LMAO!
My response is I will hunt that varmint down and get that shoe back, victory will be mine! So this is the next Facebook post my silly brother shares.

“Well Debbie Renaud-Li just got in… Ricky dropped her off….. she’s missing both shoes and smells like marshmallows….”
To which I promptly respond, “Thom, don’t you know what happens at the campground, stays at the campground!”. Whew, what a night. And I’ll let my brother tell you the ending to our tale…….
So Debbie was the victor in the Ricky raccoon saga! Deb and Nadia scoured the woods in the light of day looking for the marshmallow flip flop Ricky absconded with…. They were victorious in their quest! And the shoe was clean with no damage done. Nadia thinks we need to put the dirty shoes outside and see if they get cleaned as well. LOL!
Then we hear the tune to the movie Rocky playing in our heads. So there you have it folks, victory was mine. Yea, they have a slight raccoon problem at this campground.
We’ve been enjoying all the little creatures we’ve encountered along the way. Another thing they’re inundated with is bunnies! I believe they were brought in tame and just live in the park. Around every corner we’re finding cute little bunnies. We’ve seen black, white, brown and mixed colors roaming all around. Lizards are also out in abundance.
I actually saw a really cool thing the other day and managed to get a picture. It was a nine-banded armadillo! Do you believe it. Apparently there is only one species living in the United States, who knew? I’m still surprised I even spotted the little thing. We were coming back from the fishing dock and I saw something moving near the tree line near our RV site. I hopped out and shot multiple photos. It was a while before the little guy even spotted
me but when it did, it darted off fairly quickly. Do you see the snout in the picture? It was looking at me when I took the photo. Apparently they have poor eyesight so I was able to get fairly close to it before it realized I was there. It’s body reminded me of those little rolly pollies I used to play with as a kid.
I have a lot more to share but if I did it in this post, you’d be in overload mode, falling asleep on me over there. We’ve actually moved on to a different location but I’m trying to get caught up sharing all of our Georgia experiences with you. Another post tomorrow and I should be on top of things. As they say in the south, hope to see y’all real soon!
{HUGS} from the crew!
