Ahhh, the Coastal Life

Our stop in Galveston, TX would finally bring us back to the coast. After exploring California’s chilly coastline (brrr), it was time to check out the Gulf. I have to admit, we were a bit disappointed as the water was not clear, as we had anticipated.

You see, our experience with the Gulf has only been from Cancun and parts of Florida. We’ve never visited the Texas Gulf. We didn’t quite know what to make of it. Is it polluted or is it because there’s a storm at sea? Why in the world wouldn’t the water be clear?

Well, from the little bit of research I did, it seems that it has something to do with the Mississippi River. The westward flow of the river brings all the silt towards Galveston and Corpus Christi. The water is actually pretty clear the further you get from the coastline.

So although there probably is pollution in the water, as sadly there is in most of our oceans these days, that isn’t the cause for the lack of clarity. The sand is also more muddy and less powdery than most beaches I’ve been too. But hey, it was a coastline and I’m not complaining here! And the water temperature? It was mighty fine my friends, no chill to be had. Now we’re talking.

Anyhow, the reunion with daddy went fairly well. My youngest couldn’t get enough of him for the first few days. And she was quite ornery when we had to drop him and her sister back off at the airport. It was time for the other twin to finally get a break from the RV, albeit even if it’s only for a month.

We really didn’t do much while we were in Galveston except soak up the rays, enjoy the beach and spend some time together. Of course there was ice cream to be eaten, Texas BBQ to explore and seashells to be collected.

We caught sunrises and sunsets. There were also some interesting houses on Galveston Island to include the one we lovingly referred to as ‘the wok house’. It’s pretty darn cool, don’t you think? I bet that baby can withstand any hurricane you could throw at it!

We had pretty good weather while we were here. Our first two days were a wash, literally, as it rained. But after that, it was nice, warm sunny days in the 80’s. Galveston was good to us, even without boasting clear waters. And did I tell you we did it again? We just happened to be here during the NCAA Final Four going on in Houston.

In fact, my husband is a HUGE basketball fan having graduated from Indiana University. So my daughters attempted to purchase him an awesome seat at the game. That is, until we caught wind that the ticket was $1200!! That wasn’t going to stop them, they’ve been saving up their money for a while. We had to reason with them and let them know it wasn’t necessary.

So, after this coastal sampling, I simply had to change our return route yet again. And what took the hit? The one place I hadn’t made any reservations at yet. I knocked out Montgomery, AL and decided to route us over to Carrabelle, FL. Here we’re promised white powder beaches with crystal clear water. At least that’s what I’m hoping we get!

You see, my rational is simple. I have to test this Mississippi River theory out after all, right? And I can’t do that if I’m landlocked in Montgomery. What better way then to head over to the eastern side of the Mississippi. I know, excuses, excuses. It will be all coastal sailing from Carrabelle until we hit Williamsburg.

Not a bad view from the RV window, eh?

I’ll put Montgomery back on the list of ‘things to see and do’. I do feel a teeny weeny bit guilty as I wanted to use that stop to educate the girls about the Civil Rights Movement. That was a big focus of mine while I was earning my history degree. But all is not lost, we will delve into it a bit at home and it will have that much more meaning when we do go.

I’ve almost brought you into real-time with the crew. We’re currently hanging out in the Big Easy and enjoying all that it has to offer. Come share a beignet with us!
