Albuquerque and Meeting Celebrities
We ambled on in to American RV Park in serious need of an Internet fix! This place was just the cure for us. It’s more than I normally like to pay for campgrounds. But I’m trying to mingle cheap (aka, limited hook-ups and no free WiFi) with a little pampering every so often (aka, full-hook ups, WiFi and this place even has cable!).
Another nice bonus, continental breakfast, is included every day. The kids feel like they’re in heaven. Disney is blaring out of the T.V. and much coveted shows are being enjoyed. I did purchase a portable satellite before we left. But I decided to return it for a couple of reasons. Top of the list it was expensive and in the end, it wasn’t what I really wanted.
We haven’t managed to get a lot of exploring in yet. There are several reasons for this. We have things to get done here. One of those items was to get my daughter’s bike repaired. The chain kept falling off. I tried to DIY it but I was done. I know zero about bikes.
I sprayed WD-40 on the chain and when I brought it to the bike shop, they degreased it. See what I mean. No wonder the slipping got worse after I greased it up!! That task is now complete and she’s a happy camper.
Albuquerque is the perfect place to get these types of things done. I’m amazed how developed this city is. Maybe I’ve been hanging out in the boonies too long, who knows. But they have all the modern conveniences. The beauty of it is they also have some old town charm.
We did manage to head into Old Town Albuquerque and check it out. After all, we were in search of The Candy Lady! And find her we did. It seems they did some of the filming for the television series Breaking Bad at her shop and several others in the area.
Then we were pointed in the direction of Quesadilla Grille by recommendations from the candy shop. They had the best salsa I’ve ever had. And the quesadilla I got was out of this world. We bought some of their homemade salsa and they bottled it up for us while we waited.
My brother spotted what I think he said was the brothers of the owner cooking in the back. He asked if he could get a picture with them. The waitress was very friendly and she said she had one better than that. The owner had just arrived.
As it turns out, the owner is also a local radio icon with a stage name of Chaz Malibu. His family has lived in the area for years and he turned their old home into a restaurant. He obliged us with a photo-op.
I really like Albuquerque, but the weather s.u.c.k.s right now. Several nights have reached freezing. The days are okay but when there are windy days, and we’ve had a couple, forget about it. So it’s been a little too cold to go exploring much.
I miss being able to step outside my door and go hiking like we did at Palo Duro. I also miss the nice warm days. The evenings turned chilly there as well but at least the days gave us some reprieve.
We extended our stay here by a couple of days. I’m very torn about where we’re heading next. We were going to point Perl towards the Petrified Forest and then the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. I have campground reservations and a tour booked. But I may have to cancel.
I was talking to a campground employee the other day. It seems the South Rim of the Grand Canyon has already received some snow. I looked up the weather and sure enough, they’re due to get more this week.
Rumor has it (hey, that’s a song) that RV’ers were caught in the snowstorm. Some abandoned their rigs on the side of the road. And those that were headed towards Flagstaff, Arizona were delaying their plans.
I’m thinking we’ll have to head for warmer weather. We are just a few weeks too late for some of the things I hoped for. I was going to squeeze the Grand Canyon in on our way back east. But it’s even colder in February/March. Dilemmas, dilemmas!
A friend of mine shared this link that promises 70 degree weather if you follow this route along 13,000 miles. Good information for a full-timer. What I would give for 70 degree weather right now!
By extending our stay, I hope to fit in a few things in the area. One being the Petroglyph National Monument. I would also like to check out the hot air balloon museum and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Museum. There is so much to see and do in Albuquerque. I had also hoped to go to Santa Fe for a day trip. Don’t think it’s going to happen.
Well, I’m off to unhook my water hose so it doesn’t freeze and burst tonight. It’s supposed to get below freezing. Ugh! Tomorrow promises NO wind and highs of 60. I’ll take it :-)!
