Hilton Head Island

Oh Hilton Head Island. The last time I traveled this way, the twins were in the throws of potty training. I remember bringing their little potty chairs so I didn’t have to parade them into the nasty restrooms in all the pit stops. We’d pull in and get out their little potties. A lot has changed since then!

We did have a little hiccup when we were heading out of Carrabelle. I didn’t realize my youngest was sitting on the dinette as I pulled the slide in. It started acting up, it would pull in on one side but not the other. I pushed it back out all the way and then attempted to pull it back in. Nope, it kept getting hung up on the one side.

There was no RV repair to call and come help me out. And if I couldn’t get the slide in, we were stuck there until I could. I tried over and over again but the slide wasn’t having it. Finally, I went to look for my screwdriver to see if I could disengage the slide motor. An RV neighbor had been watching my dilemma and came over to see if he could help.

He went and got his long screwdriver as I couldn’t find mine. I went inside and pressed the button as he pushed it from the outside. Voila, the slide came in all the way without having to disengage the motor. I thanked him profusely. Phew, that was a close call. I didn’t want to be stuck in Carrabelle any longer than I had to.

I had help on both ends of our trip that day. Someone helped me get on the road in the morning and when I arrived at Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort & Marina, a neighbor came over and helped me back in. It’s such a good feeling when you’re out there doing it alone and someone lends you a hand.

The RV park here is quite different from any other RV park I’ve been to. When we arrived, I was instructed to get a golf cart and find a place on the map that we wanted. I hopped in and drove around, choosing the top two. We nestled into one of them. They do it this way so they don’t bias your decision on which spot you choose.

You see, all of the lots in the park are owned by someone. You can purchase a lot and then when you’re not here, you can offer up your spot for rent (or not, your choosing). If someone coming into the RV park picks your spot, you get half of the rent that’s collected. I thought that was pretty cool.

I picked a spot close to the playground and not too far from one of the pools. It was a good choice because the kids were swinging at the playground every day. There were two pools to choose from and the place had a nice community feel. Most of the owners do a wonderful job with the upkeep of their lots.

While here we also visited the beach. One of the beaches was very nice with a great dock going all the way to the dunes. Then there was a nice mat that ran all along the length of the walk to the beach. That way you didn’t burn your feet along the way. Parking was a whopping .50/hr.

Some of the shops looked like they hadn’t been updated since the last time we were here. I couldn’t find the spot where we stayed in 2005. But everyone was still riding their bikes everywhere, something I clearly remembered from last time. We also ended up eating at a fabulous Thai restaurant called Ruan Thai Cuisine. The seafood place we went to, Skull Creek Boathouse, was just okay. Although it did get pretty good reviews. Maybe it was what we picked, who knows.

Other than that, our time here was pretty laissez-faire. We didn’t do a whole lot of exploring because there’s really not a bunch to see. The beach is the beach and the pool at our RV park was free. And to us, free is good. We did get to see the wienermobile at the grocery story, haha!

Our next coastal destination is Myrtle Beach. It’s been many years since I’ve visited this beach town as well. Everyone cross your fingers to make sure that the slide doesn’t give me any issues this time around!
