Lake Ontario and Niagara Falls

We’re nestled in at Four Mile Creek State Park in Youngstown, New York. I really don’t have enough nice things to say about this beauty along Lake Ontario. I have to admit to you guys, I was skeptical. The price was good but we would only have electrical. Would it turn out to be a big pain in the butt? We pulled in with full propane and water tanks and empty gray and black tanks.

IMG_1934I made sure to pick a site right next to the bathhouse. Last night, we took our first shower there and I was pleasantly surprised. Nice hot showers for as long as your heart desires. Of course, that didn’t apply to me because I had to get the 8-year-old squared away. While she was drying off and dressing, I was hurrying up so she wouldn’t have to wait too long for me.

When we were done, we literally walked across the lawn and into our home. We had folks on either side of us but they moved out today. We’re in a loop all by ourselves and it’s lovely. Nice and peaceful with chipmunks running around in the trees. The weather has been pleasant too, 70’s during the day and 50’s at night.

IMG_1939We pulled in Monday around 5:00 and we’ve been busy ever since. We really could have used some more time here. Monday was a full travel day and Friday will be as well. So we have three full days to shove it all in, phew! Last night we got settled and today we went exploring. Both around the campsite and to Niagara Falls! It was a fun day.

DSCN0021Last time I was here, we ate lunch at Hard Rock Cafe in Ontario. We did the same thing this time around. A little pricier than we would have liked but my burger was oh so good. After lunch it was off to duty-free to partake in some shopping. Maple syrup, Toblerone bars, some liquor, eh, what’s not to love!

DSCN0037Then it was off to the ‘Journey Behind the Falls. We donned our yellow rain ponchos and headed towards the observatoryThis attraction allows visitors to get up close and personal to the falls. You get wet from the mist coming off those thousands of gallons of water pouring down.

You can also walk through the tunnels to two openings. Here you can view the water rushing down in front of you. I personally thought the tunnels were a tad bit creepy. As well as the green slime hanging down from the opening. But it was pretty cool to be so close to such a powerhouse. You could hear the noise of the water thundering down.

We headed home for dinner and to explore the campground. I did a little exploring the day before with Loki. I could see that Lake Ontario ran parallel to the campground. But I couldn’t see much of it. Today we walked in a different direction and actually went down to the water.

IMG_1935The sun was starting to set and it was absolutely gorgeous. Some of the campsites actually have a view of the water. I didn’t want to pay ‘premium prices’ for them though. There is another state park nearby that has a sandy beach and yet another that has a swimming pool. It’s a tad bit chilly for that right now. But I’d love to come back another time and explore some more. There are just not enough years in a lifetime. I want to see and do it all over and over again!

IMG_1937Loki dipped his paws into the water and had fun checking it out. I could tell it was cold because he ran back up whenever a wave came too close for comfort. He had two long walks today so he is pretty pooped out tonight. He’s been a pretty good traveling pup. I travel with him in his crate so there are times when he’s not happy about that. He tries to bark his way out but he’s learned that it doesn’t work. We stop every two hours for potty and water breaks. I think he’s settling in to be quite the crew member.

Tomorrow we’ll be chilling out at camp, taking a little break from all the running around. We also need to stock the fridge. I’d also like to explore a little bit around town. Thursday will find us back at Niagara Falls checking out the United States side. I had so many other things I wanted to see. But I also had intended to stay a little longer. Niagara Falls aside, there is a lot to explore here.
