Rain and Traffic

We woke up this morning to a major downpour. This, of course, was because we were supposed to break camp today and head to our new destination! Check out time is 11:00 and the weather forecast predicted the rain should be over by noon. So, I decided we’d just wait it out. Unless I absolutely had to go out in the downpour and unhook everything, I was staying put. The worst that could happen is getting charged another $3 for the day, big deal right?!

Just as the weather folks had predicted, the rain let up about 11:00. It gave way to a nice sunny day. I went outside and dumped all the tanks, unhooked everything, secured all the bay doors and my brother headed off to dump and recycle our trash. We met up at the front entrance and away we went. Goodbye Florida, hello Georgia. I admit, I get a little sentimental when we break camp but I also cannot wait for our new adventure. It still fascinates me that I can move my house wherever I want it to go. I am such a gypsy at heart.

The weather held up for us and it was a nice sunny drive. But traffic, now that’s a different story. Since we got started later than I had hoped for, the traffic wasn’t welcomed. But hey, I’m from Northern Virginia, I can handle traffic. I have no clue what the first traffic jam was about. But the second one, oh my. It was a semi that caught fire. By the time we saw it, we could see the fire started in the cab. There was nothing left of it. It started to head towards the cargo portion but must have been put out before all was lost. I hope the truck driver came out of that one alive.

We stopped off at Camping World to return a purchase that didn’t work out for us. Then we started up the generator in the Cracker Barrel RV parking lot and zapped some food in the microwave. We contemplated going in and eating but the youngest was not having any of that. Some days, it’s just easier and quicker not having to deal with all the restaurant hassle. Not to mention cheaper. Considering all the delays and late start, we didn’t do too bad. We arrived into Blythe Island Regional Park around 6:30. We got everything hooked up, I fed everyone dinner and we settled in for the night.

We have CABLE and INTERNET! All of this, right from the comforts of the RV!! I tell ya’ this internet thing was not working out so well at the campgrounds we’ve stayed at so far. And we’ve had zero working cable. Oh, there’s internet but only if you feel like walking a few miles to get to the ‘clubhouse’ to use it. And you know how molasses is, right? Slow, really, really slow.

So the big reveal is that I’m taking the girls to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island! I signed the twins up for a ‘behind the scenes tour’ of the vet facilities. For those of you who don’t know my daughters, one of the twins loves sea creatures, especially sea turtles. I’m probably as excited as they are to go and see the facility. The youngest isn’t old enough yet but she can still go into the center and look around.

Hi I’m Jet, a patient at the Sea Turtle Center!

We haven’t explored much of the campground but hope to look around tomorrow. There’s a swimming lake with a beach and two fishing lakes. The campground gets very good reviews so we’ll have to keep you posted. I would also like to explore Jekyll Island and possibly take a trolley tour. Since we’ll be heading out of here on Monday our time is short so our planning has to be good and the weather must cooperate. Unfortunately, it’s looking like a rainy weekend. After this, we head towards North Carolina. Plans are in the making to see the “World’s Largest Tire”. I’m curious to see if it lives up to its name!

Current Location = Blythe Island Regional Park, 6616 Blythe Island Hwy,
Brunswick, GA  31523

Cost = $36.63/day. This includes cable, internet, and full hook-ups.

My Observations = This campground gives me the feel of a real camping experience. In fact, the first thing I noticed was they were offering fire wood for sale. I took them up on the offer and had some delivered. This is entirely RV based. Our site was a nice, big pull thru. The electricity works fine and we have full hook-ups.

Some of the amenities include:

  • swimming lake with beach
  • laundry facility
  • hiking trails
  • boat launch
  • bath houses
  • 2 fishing lakes
