Take It Easy
Standing on the Corner in Winslow, Arizona
Such a fine site to see
It’s a girl, my Lord
Driving Perl the Ford………..
I thought you might like my little remake of the Eagles song ;-). Well, we breezed on through Winslow, Arizona with not many fine sites to see. We were headed west on 40 towards Flagstaff. After a quick lunch at Cracker Barrel, it was south on 17 towards Phoenix.
It started to snow on and off until we got a little further south. The route took us through some grades of about six percent. But Perl cruised on through, in low gear at times, without a worry.
So what have we been up to here in Phoenix? Nothing, absolutely nothing. Whenever we have a set amount of days somewhere, we have to subtract two of those days. One day on each end for travel. So we really only had three days in Phoenix.
I wanted to make this stop mainly for warmer weather. Unfortunately, we arrived as it started raining and it was pretty darn chilly! And I was out of propane, which I didn’t realize until I had Perl all hooked up. Second time I’ve done that recently. You’d think I’d learn.
But not to fear. This RV park doesn’t have propane on site. So you have to call the Arizona Propane Company, who in turn brings the propane truck to you! Sweet deal. It took two days before we had propane though. At night we used the two little electric heaters we have.
The propane ended up being about seven bucks more than I’d normally pay. They tack on various charges you normally wouldn’t pay. But it was worth it none the less. The weather has warmed up nicely throughout the week, so we really don’t need much heat at night now.
On our first full day, we stocked up on groceries. The following day the kids braved the pool, which turned out to be heated. While they splashed around, I was around the corner having fun doing laundry.
I was going to use our final full day to do some things around town but I’m not feeling this place. I checked out the zoo and it was close to fifty bucks just to get in. Then the science museum, same deal. I narrowed it down to a rock garden in the front yard of a private residence. Um, yea, I’m good.
Phoenix is a bustling city filled with an assortment of individuals. But the main occupants seem to be older retired folks. In fact, when trying to find an RV park, I had to weed through the 55+ only parks.
And who can blame them, the weather is pretty good most of the time. And of course the infamous Mayo Clinic is right around the corner. I’ll take the weather and the sunsets but don’t need the Mayo Clinic just yet. Maybe I’m just spoiled after the Painted Desert, who knows. But I just can’t find anything too spectacular here.
Tomorrow we do a bit of backtracking and head north on 17 in search of Cottonwood. It’s about 90 miles from here so a nice short drive. We’ll hang out in the Verde Valley for two weeks at the Thousand Trails Verde Valley RV & Camping Resort.
It seems to be a nice place nestled in the valley with temperatures above freezing at night, at least for the majority of our stay. This will be a nice place to take a break from constant travel. Word has it that Santa also needs to do some online shopping. So a fixed address for deliveries is a big bonus as well.
We received our monthly dump of data while we were here so we’ll be able to stay online for a while. I’m looking into grandfathered unlimited data plans but I haven’t made the leap yet. They’re out there but it’s a bit tricky to get your hands on one. And they’re also pretty pricey.
I’m navigating the market with the advice from fellow nomads Technomadia. They have a great article for members that provides a wealth of information. If you’re frequently on the road and want to know about all things technical, they’re your people. No, I’m not getting a kickback, just love their content.
This is pretty short but I wanted to check in with you all. I hope you’ll follow us on over to Cottonwood. We’d love to have you.
