Winterizing Your RV

Hi guys! Happy belated Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone out there was able to enjoy some time filled with family and friends. You may be wondering why, on this day of black Friday bliss, I’m not out among the masses of shoppers. The truth is, I avoid it like the plaque. I’d rather be here, putting together a blog post about winterizing your RV, then out there any.old.day. I detest black Friday and all that it stands for.

We did manage to get out and do some hiking in the woods today. The pictures in the post are from our outing.

So the topic at hand, winterization.

If you’re not a full-time RV’er and can’t flock south for the winter, chances are you need to think about storing your beloved for the winter months. If you live where temperatures dip below freezing, you better think about winterizing your baby.

I’m going to be truthful with you and disclose that I didn’t do my own winterizing. I tried to pull my girl into the driveway so I could accomplish a few tasks this winter but alas, she wasn’t having any of it. My driveway is pretty steep with an odd curve and the tail was dragging along the street before I could ever get her up the driveway.

So off she went to the storage facility…..

who luckily offers winterization services on-site. All I had to do was park her in the rental spot and they took care of the rest. Of course there was a price tag attached but it was well worth it.

For those not versed in winterizing an RV, you may be wondering why it’s necessary. It’s because long after you turn the faucet off, water remains in the water lines running through your RV. In order to protect the lines from freezing up and causing damage, it’s very important to winterize your RV.

In fact, before Perl became part of the family,

I had a thorough inspection done from the folks at RV Inspection Connection. They caught a leak in the drain trap located in the back bathroom. I’m pretty sure it was caused from the lack of winterization in northern Texas. So winterization can save you from future repairs.

After watching this video I feel fairly confident that if I had a place where I could have done the work (and a dump station), I could have handled the task myself. This is also a pretty decent article for winterizing if you’re not a visual learner. It also provides some great tips on things to do when storing your RV in general.

But what if you like pulling your RV out in the winter months but you still want to protect it from freezing as well? While the video did touch on a few precautions you could take, this article from Family Motor Coach Association is pretty thorough. Who knows, maybe I’ll bust Perl out early next year and take her on an outing!

So there you have it folks, a quick little post on the why’s and how’s of RV winterization with a little extra mixed in. Stay warm and cozy this winter, no matter where you’re spending it!
