Hanging Out In Chesapeake Bay, VA

Monday, August 3rd

Wow, is it really August already?! This summer is flying on by. On Monday, we arrived at the Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay RV Resort in Gloucester, VA. The trip went extremely well. We left on time, didn’t run into any traffic, didn’t get lost in a cornfield and didn’t hit any parked cars!

What we did manage to do was snag a really nice end unit spot. It’s next to the general store which has a wide assortment of ice cream for all the lovers out there. We’re also within walking distance to the pool and clubhouse.

I’ve learned with the Thousand Trail (TT) campgrounds that you want to try to arrive in between Monday and Thursday. There’s usually nice spots that everyone else has previously vacated. And since all the resorts I’ve been to are pick your own, this is pretty important. I’ll be doing a review of this campground soon, so stay tuned.

After we arrived, I immediately noticed that there was a small fenced dog park right across the street from us. I sent the kids over there with our newest crew member, Loki, so I could get everything settled and hooked up. This is another big bonus, the dog park! I love it.

Loki did fairly well on the ride up. He whined a bit here and there but he was a pretty good trooper considering he had no idea what to expect. What in the world is this moving house on wheels anyway?! Since we’ve been here, he’s settled in very nicely. He’s taken lots of walks and made some new doggy friends. I think he has a crush on a certain chihuahua that’s been coming around!

After we got settled in and ate a late lunch, we took a walk around. Then it was cooling off in the RV and getting dinner ready. The twins both have a cold and aren’t feeling well. So a quiet day was in store. Later that evening, we stopped in for ice cream at the general store. After winding down, it was bed time for the kiddos

Tuesday, August 4th

We woke up, had breakfast and tried to decide what we wanted to do with our day. The pool sounded enticing but only to Nadia and I. The twins were still blowing their noses and feeling miserable. So we took a walk and explored with area.

After lunch, I puttered around outside getting things set up. I put the outdoor rugs down, pulled out all the chairs, got a tablecloth on the picnic table and set up the dogs outdoor area. I got him this pen and it has been wonderful. I’m glad I decided to buy one but I wish it had a door on it.

Then I headed off to Wal-Mart to pick up some necessary items. It was about a half hour trek to get there. Man this campground is out in the boonies!  After I got back it was dinner, a long walk for Loki, ice cream treats at the general store, showers and bed for the kids. I stayed up too late organizing and purging unused items from the kitchen cabinets and drawers.

Wednesday, August 5th

We’re finally up to real-time. Today we got a late start. That might have something to do with my late night organizing fiasco. After breakfast, we walked the dog and got him settled. Then it was off to the pool. The older two were grumpy as teenagers can be. We stayed for a bit then walked home for lunch.

IMG_1455After lunch it was back to the pool. The grumpiness seemed to subside. It was basically a bathing suit day. Around 4′ o clock, it was time to head home for dog and dinner duties. After dinner the kids wanted to hit up the club house for an internet fix. I took Loki for a long walk.

When I headed back to the clubhouse to check on them, they were disappointed. The internet was tooooooo slow! Surprise, surprise, this is definitely the norm with nearly all the TT’s we’ve been too. But we have a mobile hotspot and while they cannot use it to their hearts desire, they can do some things with it. They’re learning to adjust.

So what does one do on a summer in August when it’s hot out? Go and get ice cream again, of course! While we were there, Loki hooked up with his chihuahua girl again. They were heading back home with their human after an evening out at the dog park.

If you’ve been following, you know this is our first time out with Loki. He’s been such a good RV dog. I think he’s actually better in the RV than he is in the house. Maybe because the space is so small. He can’t get away with much!

One thing I didn’t anticipate is how many more people we’d interact with after getting a dog. A lot more people actually. Everyone stops to pet him and talk a bit. “What breed is he”, “He’s so cute” and “How old is he” are the typical exchanges we’ve heard. People really do migrate to dogs. It’s really neat, a good way to meet new people.

After what seems to be turning into our nightly ice cream treat, we headed home. I had a ton of dishes to wash up.  Then a game of Rummikub with my daughter and they headed off to bed. So here I am spending time getting this blog post up. I’m pretty pooped after swimming back and forth in the pool today. Loki is crashed in his crate. All these doggy walks and puppy meet-ups are all the little guy can take. Tomorrow may be a repeat of today. It’s been pretty darn hot out and the pool sure did feel  nice today. There is also a very small beachy area down by the river. But I’d rather swim in the pool. And just like the TT Hershey, this campground has canoes you can rent. These do cost a small fee though. But the lake you can paddle in is fairly large.

There is also the fishing option too. The girls did enjoy doing that in Georgia. I heard there’s a fishing tournament sometime this week. There are prizes for tIMG_1457he largest, biggest and ugliest fish. Not sure if they’re interested. We’ll just have to see what the future holds.

Speaking of the future, we’ve made a decision for the fall. I’ll fill you guys in on that later. I’m waiting on one piece of the puzzle to come together before we can finalize things. But before October hits, we’ll be heading to the TT in Wells, Maine, then onto Niagara Falls and finally a final stop in Ohio for a wedding.

But before I get ahead of myself, I’ll focus on the here and now. That seems to be the only thing working in my favor this summer. Stay tuned for more adventures here in Chesapeake, VA.
